of river has muddy and sandy bottoms and channel with sustained low water has been drug out by the current. we have a fixed bottom in this area occupied by rock pinnacles. this will prove to be impasseable by any boats and barges. it will effectively close the river in this area. melissa: is there anything anyone can do or is it up just to a raindance and praying for the wetory change? >> well rain would certainly help. what we've asked for is a formal declaration of an emergency by the president and by team -- fema that would expedite the process to bla some of the rock pinnacles out with dine mitt that would make the area passable. we're facing a lower water situation coupled by the water flowing out of the missouri river which is a huge, huge tributary to the upper mississippi area, is now being reduced even further. so you have a drought situation. also coupled by the fact that flows being reduced out of missouri with a fixed ttom sticking point south of where the flows end up in mississippi. melissa: it is so dangerous to depend on the federal government for anything. we have

, loeet's talk job. that's tomorrow. some noise in this report. early thanksgiving, hurricane sandy. is this rally at the end of the day having anything to do with any anticipation of the jobs report? what are you looking for? >> no, i don't think so. we're looking for almost exactly half. we had 171,000. the consensus is 85 to 90,000. we're looking at half. i understand that, you know, superstorm san difs a horrible event, and i am sure it's going to take some jobs out, but it's going to also be a bit of an excusetrending well. i'll give you an example. wells fargo gallup does a small survey. on hiring, small businesses dropped to the lowest level of opt miimism in four years. it doesn't matter what ben bernanke does. i think his programs have long since not really helped the employment side, but the fiscal cliff is doing obvious damage. that's going to make what everybody knows is coming. we ran out of two years to sell. they're going to go from a twist to outright purchases. it's fully built into the market, but it isn't going to help. the fiscal cliff is going to do more damage to t

over the last few weeks. not much rain around here since sandy blew through. most of november was quite dry. our total for the month, just a trace. we're at almost pvents 6 of an inch. the yearly total is almost five inches below normal for the year. high temperatures today occurred just before 1:00. between midnight and 1:00 we were on the warm side of that front and the 51 degree low is the current temperature for the day. it is getting chillier. temperatures are down into the low and mid 40's. low 50's and you can kind of see the cold area coming in. 30's in oakland. 35 downtown. clear skies, northwest wind at 5 miles per hour and the sun went down a few minutes ago. 50's around here right now and it gets chillier as you head into cleveland. that is where the air is coming from. the core of the cold will pass far to our north as high pressure moves on by and on friday, the next warm front will actually be coming our way. this warm front is significant. look at the temperatures 68 in denver right now. it is going to be chilly for a couple of days, it is only for a couple of days

turned out to be up up. the jobless rate is down and the word from the government is that sandy had no substantive effect on the data. here are the numbers. unemployment down to 7.7%. the economy added 146,000 jobs, not great but good. a third of that came from the retail sector. 53,000 jobs added. professional and business services up 43,000. leisure and hospitality up. construction, though, lost 20,000 jobs. we should note that jobs numbers were revise d downward, though, for september and october. in september it was revised from 148,000 gain to 238,000. went from 138,000 to 132,000. this month, the 7.7 is a full point lower than where we were at this time last year. so what are we supposed to make of these numbers and does the november report provide us a real sense of where this recovery is right now? let's bring in the man we like to bring in every month, the chief economist for moody's analytics. mark, i have to start with this sandy impact. the labor department specifically put out a statement saying our survey response rates and the affects ee eed states. it did not affect est

the wake of hurricane sandy. can't get this stuff to america fast enough. united states fast enough. thanks to the strength of the economy, the increasing volumes with declining costs. the gross margins are expanding. how much do we love that in a rail? however, the auto industry only affects about 18% of kansas city southern's revenues. they do have some coal exposure, something that's crushed a great many american railroads, we know that because we have backed away from a lot of rails because of the coal. but they have something the other railroads don't have, consistently high growth, not that low single digit stuff and not susceptible to the cyclical nature of coal or the ongoing war between natural gas and coal in the fight to be fuel for american utilities. and that's why i'm naming it my new favorite railroad. even over and above union pacific, which has always been my favorite. don't get mad at me, union pacific. i used a great union pacific calendar, but it's december. that one's off the wall. anyway -- kansas city southern also saw some exposure to the bakken shale. they f

. super storm sandy slammed the east coast but it looks like it didn't have all that much impact on the labor market. november jobs numbers coming in much stronger than expected. steve leisman who's had a very busy week here to talk about the numbers and put it in context for us. >> hi, sue. no substantive sandy in the jobs numbers. the lack of sandy effect has us scratching our heads, what they said. i just got off the phone with the guy who's the head of doing the numbers, labor numbers at the bls. he walked me through the rather extensibilive process they did fine out if there was any sandy effect, including sampling of businesses in a flood tide areas. >> it was very meticulous. >> i'm pretty convinced they did a good job figuring out if there was an effect and there is no effect which brings us to the numbers which you could believe on face value as much as you can. they'll revise this again. they only come forward with 60% to 70% of the sample. unemployment rate falling 7.7% because largely a drop in the labor force. average hourly earnings up 0.2%. despite positive headlines, xwo

surprise. most people thought that hurricane sandy would have some sort of effect on these numbers and the labor department is telling us that sandy did not have an impact on these numbers. they looked across the country and in this region and the surveys were within normal range. they don't think it had an affect here. 12 million people unemployed. 40% of those have been unemployed for six months or longer. that's still a problem, don. to the right of your screen, 14.4% underemployment. some people call that the real unemployment rate. means a lot of people are still hurting or have been left out of the market. clearly you do have an improving situation here, improving but still leaving some people behind. this is what the trend looks like. this is the big drought of jobs, financial crisis here, slow attempt to get out of the hole. we want to see 150,000 jobs created or so every month to keep up with the growth in the population of the united states, working age population. you can see the last three months a little bit of an advance each of those months. when you go inside the sector
